4 Days Primate Safari in Rwanda

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park & Ellen DeGeneres Campus Visit

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional driver-guide who will introduce you to your safari and outline the experiences ahead. You will then begin a scenic journey to Volcanoes National Park, traveling through Rwanda’s famous rolling hills, terraced farmland, and lively rural communities.

Upon reaching the Volcanoes National Park region, you will check into your lodge and enjoy a relaxing lunch surrounded by beautiful natural scenery. In the afternoon, you will visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Fund, a modern conservation center inspired by the work of Dian Fossey.

Here, you will explore interactive exhibits, immersive displays, and educational presentations that introduce you to the lives of mountain gorillas and the importance of protecting them. This visit offers valuable preparation for your upcoming trek by helping you understand gorilla behavior and conservation efforts.

Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Experience & Transfer to Nyungwe National Park

Begin your day early with breakfast before heading to the park headquarters in Kinigi for a detailed briefing conducted by experienced rangers. You will learn about trekking rules, safety measures, and how to behave respectfully around the gorillas.

After the briefing, you will set off into the forest in search of a habituated gorilla family. The trek can vary in length depending on their location, but it takes you through dense vegetation, bamboo forests, and scenic volcanic terrain. The journey itself is an adventure, offering opportunities to appreciate the park’s unique ecosystem.

Once you locate the gorillas, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing them as they feed, interact, and care for their young. This close encounter is both powerful and humbling.

After the trek, return for lunch before beginning your transfer to Nyungwe National Park. The drive offers spectacular views of tea plantations and rolling hills. Upon arrival in the evening, check in, enjoy dinner, and rest.

Day 3: Black-and-White Colobus Monkey Trekking & Canopy Walk

After an early breakfast, you will head to the park headquarters of Nyungwe National Park for a briefing before beginning your trek in search of black-and-white colobus monkeys. These striking primates are known for their long flowing tails and dramatic coloration, often moving in large, active groups high in the forest canopy.

As you follow your guide through the rainforest, you will observe their feeding habits, social interactions, and agile movements through the trees. The experience is lively and different from gorilla trekking, offering a dynamic and engaging wildlife encounter.

After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch or relaxation before heading out for the famous canopy walk. Suspended high above the forest floor, the walkway offers breathtaking panoramic views of the rainforest and surrounding hills. It is an excellent opportunity for photography and spotting birds and other wildlife from above.
